BRANFORD — The usual beehive of activity on the Branford Green is going to the dogs … and cats … and horses … and even some non-creepy crawlers and trawlers — when Branford Compassion Club hosts its annual Animal Awareness Day there, Sunday, Oct. 6 from noon to 4 p.m.

The shower helped raise funds, as well as collecting needed items such as food, litter, and toys to support the club's mission of helping shelter and feral cats.

UNLV junior Kelsey Elizabeth Matthews has been awarded the prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship for 2022, the foundation announced.
Matthews, a social work major and a member of the Honors College, is one of just 58 students nationwide to win the highly coveted award. As Nevada’s only recipient this year, she was selected from an impressive pool of 705 candidates nominated by 275 colleges and universities. Matthews is the seventh student in UNLV’s history to win the award.
The 2022 class of Truman Scholars has been announced by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. This year’s scholars include 58 college students representing 53 U.S. colleges and universities.
Considered the premier graduate scholarship for students who intend to enter governmental work or public service, the Truman Scholarship was created by an act of Congress in 1975 soon after President Harry S. Truman passed away. It was established as a living memorial to Truman, and for more than 40 years Truman Scholarships have reflected the legacy of the 33rd President by supporting and inspiring Americans from diverse backgrounds to enter public service.

23-year-old Kelsey Matthews is a junior at UNLV, and not only is she already holding a pageant title, but now she is a Truman Scholar. Out of 705 candidates nationwide, Matthews was given an opportunity of a lifetime. The UNLV Rebel overcame life’s biggest obstacles to help people in her community.
WASHINGTON, DC – The Board of Trustees of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation announced today the 58 exceptional college students from 53 U.S. colleges and universities selected as 2022 Truman Scholars. The Truman Scholarship is the premier graduate scholarship for aspiring public service leaders in the United States.
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation reviewed 705 files from 275 institutions. Students were nominated by their institution based on their records of leadership, public service, and academic achievement. Our Finalist Selection Committee selected 189 students from 126 institutions to interview with the Foundation’s Regional Review Panels between March 1 and April 4. In 2022, the foundation selected 58 outstanding college students from 53 institutions as Truman Scholars.
The Mary Christie Institute (MCI) has launched the National Youth Council on College Mental Health, a group of eight college students and recent graduates nationwide who have demonstrated dedication to mental health advocacy and helping improve institutional support for student mental health.
Kelsey Matthews was appointed to the Mary Christie Institute's (MCI) inaugural National Youth Council On College Mental Health. The council consists of college students and recent graduates who have demonstrated dedication to mental health advocacy and helping improve institutional support for student and mental health. As council members, they will be discussing issues in college student wellbeing, providing critical input to support MCI's mission to educate, inform, and inspire colleges and universities to create cultures of wellbeing.
